Camp Adair High Swing

Slowly climbing up the slippery metal staples, I yelled “ooouuuch,” As one of my feet slipped and smashed my shin on the metal. A drop of blood dribbled down to my shoe, but I was determined to get to the top. Climbing over a random piece of wood, I was nearly at the platform when the Instructor asked “Good climbing mate, by any chance are you a rock climber?” I replied, kind of laughing. “Nah mate no I’m not into that stuff.” I said. Standing on the platform at the top of the pole, I was looking at the view of some of the camp, and saw Beef diving under a series of poles getting as muddy as possible. I turned around and started to listen to the end of the instructors’ instructions to hear him say “Got it?” I said “Yep.” I replied without even thinking. He said “Okay, I’m going to unclip your harness from the pole and your going to feel the ropes pull on you so lean back, okay, we sweet?” Again I replied without thinking. “Yeah.” Then I heard a yell coming from the instructor. “Okay guys lets have a countdown for Jake aye?” “3, 2,”

“Huuuh.” I tried to yell but nothing came out as I fought for air when I swung down and over the rest of the activity group, and when it slowed down I was yelling “Get me out of this harness before it rips through my undies.” Everyone cracked up laughing including the ground instructor that was laughing so hard she couldn’t even catch my legs. Finally she stopped me completely and went to get the ladder. When she placed it under my feet, I stumbled on to it, and waited for her to unclip me from the ropes. Straight away I jumped down from the ladder and loosened my harness and my jockeys before I sat down. The instructor said.“ You’re meant to wait until three when you jump.” I replied nearly about to crack up laughing. “I didn’t want the wedgie to ride up too much!” Cameron’s Dad asked “How was it?” I answered “Sore but I’m up for another go.” Aidan was the second one to go since I was first and he started to climb up the wooden pole. When he got to the top he freaked out and didn’t jump off for about half an hour but everyone else that got to the top ended up swinging down and finishing it.

After everyone had tried to conquer the High Swing I asked the ground instructor if I could go again and she replied. ” You’d be pushing it.” At the end of the activity I ended up completing the High Swing twice, and I’m pretty sure I ended up making the Instructor’s interval a little bit shorter than usual…
